Theresa Sparkes was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. She began dancing at the age of eight, training and competing in jazz, ballet, lyrical, tap, musical theatre and hip hop. This dedication to dance allowed her to participate in numerous dance conventions throughout Canada, such as Triple Threat, Coastal Dance Rage and Groove Street.
At the age of 16, she realized a new passion for choreography and began exploring this new way of expressing herself. She took part in week-long intensives in Edmonton, Alberta, at the 3rd Street Beat Hip Hop Studios; she trained in various styles of hip hop under the instruction of Popin Pete, Suga Pop and others who were the creative foundation of hip hop style. This experience gave her insight and appreciation for the history of hip hop and its many forms, including house, popping, locking, krump, dance hall, tutting, wackking, breaking and commercial hip hop.
Theresa brought her knowledge back home to Calgary where she continues teaching and training. She has taught at numerous studios around the city, as well as schools around Alberta, sharing her passion with thousands of students. Education and training motivates her to become a better dancer and teacher, as she continues to get involved with the local dance community and perform whenever there is an opportunity. Her passion for dance and the arts continues and is seen in her innovative and energetic choreography. Her work is critically acclaimed and has won numerous overall awards for both her performance and choreography.
She trains and performs professionally with IllFX Entertainment and also had the opportunity to dance at “We Day” Calgary in 2014 & 2015 alongside many talented dancers. She looks forward to broadening her dance experience both locally and internationally and is thrilled to be a part of the Calgary dance community.
Theresa encourages others to get involved in dance and appreciate it in its many forms.
